Electric Scooters - The Future Of Urban Transportation

Electric is inevitable and there has never been a better time for the electric mobility market. While cities are getting increasingly congested, there is a pressing need to switch to smart mobility solutions for the urban commute. Challenges In a Growing Sector

Having said that, the industry has its fair share of challenges. Infrastructure consisting of charging pods and stations are few in numbers in most cities. For smart scooters that capture riding patterns, location tracking and other consumer data, there is concern regarding privacy and security. There is a lack of regulation and policies from central governments and transport bodies. With ride sharing, as convenient as it is to download an app, scan a barcode and get going, there are big questions around safety and accountability. Nobody is docking their scooters responsibly, few wear helmets and scooters are left cluttering the sidewalks. Service providers are exploring ways to give an answer to these apprehensions.

Urban millennials and largely, the working population are a strong market for e-scooters and e-bikes. It's fun, light and people feel connected to their cities and surroundings. What is a big win for some of the companies in this domain is the customer experience they are able to provide. By learning about rider behaviour under different circumstances, they are able to tailor their operations and offerings accordingly.

In Estonia, the electric scooter ‘Stigo’ that claims to fold up in two seconds flat. Zero emission scooters are fast becoming the answer to intra-city travel for short distances, to save time and help the environment. In the UK, electric scooters are closer to getting the green light to be legalized, as a part of the government’s larger review of transport laws. They have remained illegal in the UK because they don’t meet the safety and legal regulations for motorized vehicles. The global e-scooter market is expected to be worth $51.3 billion by 2026 and London remainsone the biggest untapped opportunities in Europe.

The Road Ahead

All said and done, electric scooters are here to stay and are set to transform the personal mobility ecosystem. It will make us rethink our transport options, improve the quality of life and forever change the way we travel from point A to point B.
